Read all about the fabulous time Year 7 had at their recent trip to historical Rochester, written up by Izzy in year 7.

Wow, what a fantastic school history trip Year 7 had to Rochester on 21st January 2025. To be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to the day – being neurodiverse any changes to the normal routine can be very overwhelming. However, I had the BEST time of my life!!!!

First of all, after what seemed like a very long coach journey, we arrived at Rochester Cathedral which was founded in AD604. Interesting fact: Rochester Cathedral is the second oldest cathedral in England. Once arriving, we had an interactive history tour, walking through the cathedral timeline from it’s Saxon beginnings to The Norman invasion and the massive growth in medieval times which is our current topic in history lessons. It was so interactive we had to climb up the pilgrim steps on our knees like the medieval pilgrims did when visiting the shrine of William of Perth – lots of sore knees in Year 7!!!!!!!!!! We also got to dress up as various characters along the way such as Nuns and Pilgrims. Next was a scavenger hunt where we searched for many different hidden features such as faces carved in stone and pillars.

Our final activity before lunch was to visit the Norman built Rochester Castle, an imposing fortress with a complex history of destruction and rebuilding -a great example of a Motte and Bailey Castle. Once we’d finished lunch, the Guildhall Museum was our next stop for a workshop about the different equipment knights wore and the history of Rochester. The museum was really cool with lots of visual effects and models. Before returning back to Sutton High, the trip was made even sweeter by a final stop at an old fashioned candy store – YUM!!!!!
