Year 1 and Year 2
’Welcome to our Nativity!’ declared Neha and we were off.
We had worked so hard to remember our lines and all of the movements to go with our fabulous songs and we were nervous. We also felt excited though and really proud of our achievement, the telling of the story about the angel who was always late was funny as well as serious as we retold the story of Christmas and the birth of baby Jesus. We loved performing and the audience clapped so loudly for us which was great fun. We worked as a team and everyone had their moment to shine and we felt so happy to be able to share it with everyone. Merry Christmas everyone.
Year 6
On Monday 4th of December, Year 6 were very lucky to have Mrs James, the school’s very own archivist, talk to us about Sutton High School during World War II.
Mrs James told us many fascinating facts about the time when SHS experienced the war. We learnt that a new headmistress joined the school just as WWII started. Her name was Miss Charlesworth and she has her own room named in honour of her (the Charlesworth Room). Personally, we would have loved to go to school in those times, despite the war, as to begin with the girls only went to school for half a day whilst the shelters were being built. We were fascinated to learn that Mary Mackenzie Anderson, the daughter of the Anderson shelter Home Sec, went to our school. Sometimes, the schoolgirls had to stay in the shelters for the whole day!
Mrs James brought in some old school accessories that were worn during the war, such as scarves and hats and she even brought in part of a bomb. The talk with Mrs James taught us so much about the history of SHS, and has inspired us even more with our World War II topic. We were incredibly lucky to have Mrs James with us on Monday. Not many schools have the opportunity to talk with our own archivist!
By Aminah and Aroha, Year 6
On Thursday 30th November, the whole of Year 6 visited the Salvation Army to perform in a Christmas Carol Concert. It was such a fun and enjoyable experience, and everyone had a wonderful time there. We walked in pairs in the crisp, cold air and finally we saw the first glance of the Salvation Army Church. We were very excited when we walked into the building: we couldn’t wait to start singing the songs that we had been practising so much.
People of all ages were waiting patiently in the hall for Sutton High to begin their performance. The room was decorated with Christmas decorations and a ginormous Christmas tree covered in bows and twinkling lights. Sweetly, music was playing and soon after, the soloists began their performances.
Ariadna played the violin, Laura played the clarinet and piano, Esther and Mya sang solos, Sherry played the flute and Jisoo played the piano and trumpet. All of year 6 sang ‘One Song’, ‘Free as a Bird’ and ‘You Will Be Found’, as well as a wonderful collection of Christmas Carols. Our carols were: O Little Town of Bethlehem, We Three Kings, Away in a Manger, Deck the Halls and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Everyone had a fantastic time, including the audience, who joined in joyfully with the Christmas carols.
The afternoon bought joy to the whole of Year 6 and the trip to the Salvation Army has truly started out Christmas.
