The Week in Prep

Reception

Reception were shocked to discover a crashed rocket on the field next to Fernwood – what had happened? Where did it come from? How did it get there? Was anyone (or anything) in the rocket? The girls had so many questions! They used their superpower of Curiosity and suggested answers to the questions.
We even had our very own News Reporter giving her comments from the scene!
They observed carefully and then drew a labelled diagram of all of the wreckage that they saw.

Year 1

Year 1 have been having a great summer so  far despite the weather!  We had planted some potatoes in the spring and we have been so excited to see how much they have grown.  We are looking forward to a great crop of potatoes in the autumn.  We used tape  measures to record how tall our potato plants had grown and we estimated how long we thought the roots could be.  One enquiry question was why have some plants grown more than others and we came up with many different suggestions.  Some plants may have had more sunlight as we know the leaves of the plant use sunlight to make food.  Some plants may have had more water.   Some plants may have been in the shade more than other plants.

We have also been having fun with clay.  We know the features of fish from our Science lessons and we have modelled our own fish from clay.  We are waiting for them to dry before painting them.  We had to learn the skills of  modelling and joining clay pieces together so that when the clay dries the pieces don’t fall off!  It was great fun and we are really pleased with the results!

Year 2

This week Year 2 have been fostering creativity and innovation in our young minds. Design and Technology plays a transformative role in, inspiring young learners to become problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and future innovators. Our challenge was to create a house that could withstand flooding. The girls brainstormed, planned and then began constructing houses on stilts. How to connect the stilts? What materials could we use? Will it stand straight? How can we get the stilts all the same size? So many questions and so little time. The girls used collaboration, perseverance and a lot of curiosity to come up with a masterplan to create their finished products. Watch this space for further progress…..

Year 3

Y3 have been learning about the importance of biodiversity and how human activity can impact this. We had a walk around school to inspect how biodiverse we are and noticed how diverse some areas are. The girls also made suggestions on how to increase biodiversity, such as creating a pond area and adding more woodlands for habitats.

When Circus came to Sutton High : By Annie Sun – Year 3

In Year 3, we are reading the book ‘Leon and the Place Between’. At the start of the book, Leon goes to the circus, and we really wanted to go to the circus so in school we made our own year 3 circus. We were SO excited when it was time to go to the circus – you were not allowed in if you did not have a ticket! Rebecca was our Ringmaster checked that we had a ticket on entry.

First there was a tightrope station, then a tasting station where we got to taste some delicious, crunchy toffee popcorn and some strawberry candyfloss that melted on my tongue. It tasted really nice.

We then got to try juggling, I was surprised because of our teachers, Mrs Dean, was really good at juggling. Next we became acrobats and had to do tricks.

The circus was really fun and then we wrote all about it in our English lessons.

Year 4

Year 4 have been learning survival skills in swimming, for example, how to swim underwater without goggles, how to remove heavy clothing underwater, and how to float on their backs.
