Kiran Millwood-Hargrave visits Sutton High School!

As part of the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) Book Tour, we had the honour of hosting the acclaimed author Kiran Millwood Hargrave. This event was a unique opportunity for our Year 6 and 7 students, as well as the Year 6 students from Robin Hood Junior School, to engage with a celebrated writer and gain insights into the world of storytelling.   Kiran is an author, playwright and poet and is best known for her award-winning children’s fiction. She captivated students with her engaging presentation as she shared her journey as a writer and introduced her latest works, including the much-anticipated Geomancer trilogy. Kiran shared fascinating insights into her new books, In the Shadow of the Wolf Queen and The Storm and the Sea Hawk, and it was wonderful to see so many students asking thoughtful questions during the Q&A session. The students were enthralled by her stories of Celtic rainforests, talking root systems, and ancient Greenland sharks, which brought the magic of her books to life. The event was a great success, with 75 copies of Kiran’s books sold through our local bookshop, Wimbledon Books. Kiran graciously signed each copy, along with additional books brought by students and staff. Her publisher has also promised to send us bookmarks and more signed plates for students who purchase books after the event.

Kiran Millwood Hargrave’s visit to our school is part of a larger initiative where she is visiting 12 GDST schools across the UK. These visits are offered at no cost to the schools, with the only prerequisite being the sale of books through local independent bookshops. This initiative not only supports local booksellers but also ensures that students have the opportunity to engage with literature in a meaningful way.
