“Year 6 had an exciting and immersive India Day, packed with creative activities and hands-on experiences that brought their learning about Indian history and culture to life. The day was designed to be both educational and enjoyable, giving the girls the opportunity to explore different aspects of Indian heritage through art, technology, and movement.
The morning started Year 6 designing their own Indus Valley seals, a fascinating glimpse into one of the world’s earliest civilisations. Using clay, they carefully crafted seals inspired by the symbols and images used by the Indus Valley people thousands of years ago. This hands-on activity allowed them to connect with ancient history in a fun and interactive way.
Next, the girls had the incredible opportunity to step back in time through a virtual reality (VR) experience of the Indus Valley. With the use of VR headsets, they explored the ruins of this ancient civilisation, seeing how people lived, what their cities looked like, and gaining a deeper understanding of their way of life. The excitement in the room was clear as they marvelled at the incredible visuals and technology that made history feel so real. The girls then put their creative writing skills to the test by composing postcards inspired by what they had seen and learned. They imagined themselves as travellers or even residents of the Indus Valley, capturing their experiences in beautifully written pieces.
The afternoon was just as engaging, starting with a high-energy Indian dance workshop. The girls enthusiastically took part, learning traditional moves and rhythms. The session was filled with laughter, music, and impressive performances as they embraced this dynamic and expressive art form.
Following the dance session, the focus shifted to art and design. The girls explored symmetry in architecture by studying the stunning Taj Mahal, before creating their own symmetrical patterns inspired by this iconic landmark. They also worked on designing Mandela coasters, bringing together elements of traditional Indian patterns and colours to produce beautiful, intricate designs. India Day was a fantastic success, giving the girls a chance to deepen their understanding of Indian culture while having lots of fun. From creating and designing to dancing and exploring through VR, it was a memorable experience that truly brought history and culture to life.” – Ms McHenry
