Before Half Term, Year 2 presented their assembly to parents and friends, telling their audience about the first six weeks as the oldest girls in Key Stage One. They talked about the exciting things that they had done already – the responsibility of choosing reading books themselves, selecting their own lunches (showing themselves to be fiercely independent, of course!) and lots about the topics they had covered in class.

Sutton High’s superpowers were demonstrated through the character of Rocket in the book ‘Look Up!’ Rocket has a wealth of these superpowers – curiosity, reflectiveness, bravery, drive, resilience, initiative and self-assurance – as she is so determined to be an astronaut.

The girls showed their empathy when giving advice to the Midnight Panther character in Poonam Mistry’s book of the same name. This book, part of our ‘Reading Undivided’ curriculum, is a fable which teaches us the importance of being yourself and how special we are as individuals. The Panther discovers at the end that he doesn’t need to blaze like the sun as Lion does, or be bold and fearless like Tiger, or dazzle like Leopard. He is a Midnight Panther!

Year 2’s Humanities topic, the Victorians, was also a key part of the assembly, as they enacted the visit of Princess Louise (Queen Victoria’s daughter) to Sutton High School in May 1887 when she officially opened the new school buildings. Her Royal Highness actually arrived at our school in a procession of three carriages – see the newspaper cutting for more details! Year 2 ended their assembly with a summary of what they had learnt at their recent visit to Gatton Park and how much they are looking forward to their next Big Event – the Christmas Play! As Maya said at the end, ‘We can’t wait!’
