On Saturday, 20th January we celebrated our school’s 140th anniversary, and welcomed back over 100 alumnae, past and current teaching staff, and students as well as the CEO of the GDST, Cheryl Giovannoni.
Our school archivist and former head of history, Mrs Sue James, gave an enthralling presentation on the school’s colourful history and peppered it with humorous anecdotes provoking hoots of laughter amongst the audience. Following Mrs James’ presentation, attendees were treated to afternoon tea, fizz, and tours of the school from current sixth formers.
Said Head, Beth Dawson, “What a wonderful celebration our 140th anniversary has been! Our school’s DNA is made up of trailblazing women; from Frances West, the first Sutton High student to go to university (Somerville College Oxford) in 1897, to Marianna Spring the BBCs first ever disinformation correspondent in 2020. What better way to celebrate this momentous occasion than to look back at our history and share our alumnae stories, the bedrock of Sutton High School’s trailblazing history, a history that unflinchingly emphasises our school’s commitment to girls ‘learning without limits’.
She added, “It was a privilege to welcome so many former staff and alumnae back to Sutton High School to celebrate our 140th birthday. Huge thanks to our former Head of History and school archivist Mrs Sue James for her wonderful presentation on the school’s formidable history.”
